Degree of polynomial, deg p

A polynomial pP(F)p \in \mathcal P(\mathbf F) is said to have degree mm if there exist scalars a0,a1,,amFa_0,a_1,\dots,a_m \in \mathbf F with am0a_m \ne 0 such that

p(z)=a0+a1z++amzmp(z) = a_0 + a_1z + \dots + a_mz^m

for all zFz \in \mathbf F. If pp has degree mm, we write degp=m\deg p = m.

The polynomial that is identically 00 is said to have degree -\infty.
