Ok day, diden't get much done but diden't waste much time either. I think I was just tired.
Got up late because I went to bed late, only started work by 10am.
Did 2h geometric algebra, learned about scalar products (generalization of dot products to k-blades). I can compute the dot product between subspaces now! And scalar product being zero makes sense.
Spent 30m reading macdonald (geometric algebra and calculus). I admire the books and how he explains stuff but I know most of the content so it wasn't very productive. I did finally learn what a tangent bundle is (it's so obvious how did I not understand before)
Spent 2h 40m fixing someones windows wifi card, should have reinstalled immediately; trying to root cause on windows is too hard.
Spent 20m skeletoning the rest of axler 3e, diden't have much energy or motivation.
Spent an hour and a half messing with random math stuff. Diden't get much done, should have been casually reading.
Spent 20m reading lesswrong, ate dinner, spent an hour on discord and reading some blogs.
Setup syncthing for my books, it's great. Did some random math, Now I'm journaling.
Some of the interesting stuff I read:
-
Continuous Improvement: Insights from 'Topology'
I really like the intuition that compact means "small", small when the way we measure size is by cardinality of open sets.
-
A Kernel of Truth: Insights from 'A Friendly Approach to Functional Analysis'
Very interesting stuff, I skimmed the book and it doesn't seem that hard. I've got to up my textbook speedrunning game though. I'm going too slowly (need to get up to a textbook a month pace).
-
Insights from Euclid's 'Elements'
He says he has a habit of completionism, if anything I'd benefit from this habit! Tomorrow I'm going to study axler all day, goal is finish by april 15th (I can do it if I spend ~6h/day and sleep).
I need to work on my AI scope insensitivity to improve my motivation, maybe reading bostrom will help?
Tomorrow's goals:
- Do axler all day (speedrun axler insanely fast, need to do a section a day to finish in 2 weeks)
- Get off computer at 9pm or sooner and read (I want to get up early, but I've stopped using an alarm clock because "natural" and all that). I might have to start using one just so I get serious about going to bed early
